Models & Specifications

Currently we offer three mono electric models – the DF-6 (six string), the DF-7 (seven string) and the DF-8 (eight string) with various customisation options. The DF-8 is also available as a stereo instrument with separate outputs for each group of 4 strings. Several electronic configurations are possible with the stereo DF-8. All of our electric models come with and on-board active preamp/buffer powered by a single 9V battery.

We also offer a 6 ,8 or 10-string, acoustic model (DF-A). By the end of 2021 we will also be offering a 12-string model with reduced string spacing. In order to keep weight and clutter to a minimum these instruments do not have an on-board preamp. Use of an external preamp is strongly recommended.

There are also several ideas for new and different instruments in various stages of development. You can check out some of these ideas here.

A Note About Scale Length: While its stated that the scale length for all our models is 25.5″, we understand that this could be a little misleading (though not intentional). The problem arises from trying to describe ‘scale length’ in an instrument that has no nut or corresponding ‘open’ string. The fret spacing is the same as a 25.5″ instrument with a fret (fret 0) where the nut usually goes and additional space behind it for the damper and retainer bar … so our 25.5″ ‘scale length’ refers to the distance between fret 0 and the theoretical bridge position, not the overall ‘free’ vibrating length of the string. It gets even more confusing for the acoustic models as they do have a nut, but its position still does not correspond exactly to a standard nut position (this is done so the dampened ‘open’ string sounds a semitone lower than the first fretted note). Since the fret positions are the same as our electrics we continue to state a 25.5″ scale, though in this case it could also be reasonably argued that the actual ‘scale length’ is more like 27.5″.

Strings and spacing :

All electric models are available in any desired tuning (individual strings between B0 and E4) with either flat-wound or round-wound strings. Gauges available range between 0.140″ to 0.008″ though it is generally more optimal to steer away from the extremes. We proudly use custom strings made here in Argentina by LemmaSound Strings, but any standard electric bass or electric guitar strings can also be used (Note: some simple modification to higher gauge bass strings maybe required)

Be aware that these instruments are rather like a minimalist, long-scale electric guitar with a wide fretboard – guitarists will initially find the string spacing wider than what they are used to at the nut, while bass players will find them closer together at the bridge.

For our acoustic models we generally use nylon core, silver-plated wound strings (designed for classical guitar). These offer a mellow tone and beautiful bass response. Possible tunings are more limited however and we cannot go lower than C1 or above C4.

Finishes :

All models are hand-finished – sealed with shellac and polished with our own beeswax/walnut oil paste. This makes for a beautiful natural finish that is easily maintained with occasional application of paste and buffing if necessary. If you’re a sweaty palm person, or desire a more impermeable laquered finish then you should let us know.
